In paint I think a lot about non-human perspectives, the buckling of space and narrative time. I try to work from a physical connection to nature and place; to create worlds tethered to the chaotic and muscular logic of this one.
The term ‘environment’ can imply a disassociation between us and what we call wild or, conversely, industrial. I am interested in articulating a place of spirit and interconnection, one that challenges this conceit. I find resonance in shintoism, myth, the old connections of religions to nature, and to Arne Naess's idea of deep ecology.
Many of my recent paintings are un-stretched. Drawn to the flux of boundaries and uncertainty of wholes, I play with the shift between a thing, a backdrop, a window. I am interested in a glimpse or the coexistence of disparate outcomes as in my spin series and some of my diptychs.
When not painting I help manage a farm and have worked as a part-time journalist focused on science and culture. I currently live on Cape Cod. I have prosopagnosia (face-blindness), and my fondness for people coupled with this sometimes anonymity also informs my work.
